I get many questions about different types of massage/bodywork/healing out there. One type of therapy is Reiki, pronounced: ray-kee. Reiki means Universal Life Energy. Sound kind of woowoo and “out there”? It’s not. We all carry a vibration, something that resonates….us, who we are or what we’re feeling in a particular moment. The best way to describe this is to think of a time you went to go out to dinner with another couple, for instance. You went to pick them up, and you just know, feel, that they’ve been fighting. It’s an uncomfortable feeling, shifting eyes, fake attempts to be cheerful and “ready to go” with a pitch to the voice that’s just not right. This feeling hangs in the air, you walk into it, feel it and know. You are picking up the vibration, or energy, of that person, or people. I think this is so easily discernible because the feelings are so strong.

Some people are more sensitive to it than others and have a natural gift. Others of us work to develop the skills more deeply. I’ve been told, and believe, that we all possess these talents. Anyone can learn. It’s like tuning in to a radio station. On one side it’s really fuzzy, go too far the other way, nothing. But, tune in just right and you have perfect sound, clarity, no static. This is what developing your Reiki healing skills is like.

So, these feelings and energy are all around us at all times. We can tap into them for healing and balancing the energy that is out of balance. The person guiding the Reiki tunes in more clearly to a balanced state of being, and helps either themselves or another person, or animal, in healing. It never harms, is very calming and relaxing. The practitioner may work just off the body, not touching them, or putting their hands in certain positions gently. Reiki is usually done with clothing on, but often, I incorporate it right into a massage session.

These ideas of energy date back to ancient yoga texts. I learned that it was possible that Jesus used Reiki, or a form of it, in his hands on healing. There are MANY documented cases of healing with Reiki. An invaluable site is the local practioner and healer, William Lee Rand. From his site, here are a few things that Reiki may help with:

“Reiki has had a positive affect on all forms of illness and negative conditions. This includes minor things like head or stomach aches, bee stings, colds, flu, tension and anxiety as well as serious illness like heart disease, cancer, leukemia, etc. The side effects of regular medical treatments have also been reduced or eliminated. This includes the negative effects of chemotherapy, post operative pain and depression as well as improving the healing rate and reducing the time needed to stay in the hospital. Reiki always helps and in some cases people have experienced complete healings which have been confirmed by medical tests before and after the Reiki treatments. However, while some have experienced miracles, they cannot be guaranteed. Stress reduction with some improvement in ones physical and psychological condition are what most experience.”

A few Reiki books to further explore are:

Essential Reiki by Diane Stein

The Reiki Touch by William Lee Rand (Comes with cards, Dvd and Cds)

The best way to experience Reiki is to try a session for yourself!

If you’ve ever been to a yoga class, you may have heard the words, “Take this feeling of yoga off the mat, and share it with those you surround yourself with.” Or, “Off the mat, and into the world.”

There is always the idea of spreading around the joy, good feelings and wisdom. I think gratitude is a choice. You can choose to follow the mind’s pull toward wanting more, or you can choose have contentment. In yogic terms: one of the kleshas, (mind’s afflictions), the mind’s attachment (raga) toward what is pleasurable, while having an aversion (Dvesha) from what is painful. Thus, you can choose Santosha, or contentment instead.

Not looking behind us to the past, or to the future, but living in the now of what we have. Then, sharing those good feelings. As you radiate your center of gratitude, others will feel it too. Maybe they will pay it forward.

Find at least ONE thing in your life to be thankful for every day.
Happy Thanksgiving.

It’s been 12 years since I started massage school, and ever since then, I have heard of the dangers of deodorant. The main problem being the aluminum in it that blocks the odors, and may be linked to Alzheimer’s. Off and on, over that time, I have experimented with every kind of natural alternative to the antiperspirants. The natural crystals, Tom’s of Maine, Herbal Clear, Nature’s Gate, and most recently, a product called Lavilin, which claims to keep you odor free for up to 7 days! I have gone back and forth to a “regular” deodorant, tried a natural one, etc. But, about 7 months ago, as I went in to get one, I noticed an FDA warning on them! On deodorant. It is a warning about the dangers of excessive aluminum on the kidneys. It is for people with renal disease, I now know, but didn’t when I saw the warning label. Still, they are now openly recognizing the problem.

There has also been some ideas about deodorants causing breast cancer, though none of the Cancer institutes claim it. I think the thing to think about here, is:
1. Antiperspirants block what is trying to escape, toxins. If you block that up, it has to go back into the body, right at the lymph nodes under the arms.
2. All the aluminum and other nasties in these deodorants, like parabens, are being absorbed into the body every day, and may accumulate.

So, what are we to do? We couldn’t smell… No one wants to be the smelly kid.
Here’s a little run down of some alternatives. Some work better than others. Some, not at all, in my experience!

1. Arm & Hammer Essentials Natural Deodorant-Unscented. What I’m using now. Works well, no purfumey fragrance.

2. Nature’s Gate Organics Fruit Blend. My second favorite, has Certified Organic Botanicals. I like the Orange Patchouli.

3. Tom’s of Maine. Nice fragrances like Lavender.

4. Herbal Clear Naturally-Sport. Smells the most like a regular deodorant, with Lichen, Tea Tree and Vitamin E. The Lichen inhibits bacteria. This one is also alcohol free.

5. Lavilin. Supposedly works for up to 7 days, even through bathing. You are supposed to be any other deodorant free for 48 hours first, then use it. This did not work at all, and actually gave me a weird odor. (I read online that they reformulated it, maybe it was better before)

6. Spray bottle of water and essential oils like lavender and tea tree, and also baking soda. Works for a bit.

7. Addidas makes one with Cotton Tech and Pure Lightness that it seems a lot of reviewers like, I haven’t tried this one yet, but plan to.

With most of these, if you eat food that comes out of your pores, or work or exercise hard, you will have to wash and reapply. Experiment for yourself, you’re worth it!

So, I had the opportunity to see the movie Where the Heart Is. The screenplay, written by Lowell Ganz, is based on the novel by Billie Letts. I got hooked in by the plot of a woman living in a Wal-mart, and came away with a fine example of a yoga philosophy ~ Satya, or Truthfulness.

The main character gets pregnant at 17, left by her boyfriend, lives in a Wal-mart, and has her baby there. But, then her life begins to turn around. She makes friends who take care of her, she works, develops a passion for photography and falls in love. But, she doesn’t think well enough of herself to claim it. She lies to the man she loves and he leaves. She, of course, is miserable. Then, her old baby-daddy comes back into the picture as a horrible wreck: drugs, broke and having lost his legs in a train accident. He tells her he wishes he could go back and undo the lie he told her on the day he left her. He said he couldn’t feel the baby’s heart beat. He says he now realizes how one lie can change your whole life….

Because of it, she finds her love and admits her lie. They live happily ever after.

How often do we lie? Small lies, big lies, lies to ourselves? This is one of the foundations of yoga practice: to be truthful. Like so many habits we have, lying, even white lies, is one to look at in ourselves. I think many times, it is a protection habit that could be left behind. The yogis honor Ahimsa, non harming, above all others, but it is a fine line with lying. As with our heroine above, she felt that she was protecting her lover from a life less than her idea of perfect for him, but it was his choice to make, not hers.

How can we honor truth in our lives and still be gentle?

So, I had a sore throat off and on last week. I stopped in to Total Health Foods on Northline in Southgate to pick up the Cold Care tabs. Great time to experiment, I thought…..

I began my regime: 2 tabs under the tongue every 15 minutes. Wow! Talk about commitment! I set my stove timer.
The sore throat was gone after a few times. I continued to take them for the full 2 hours, then stopped. It says that after that, you can continue to take 2 tabs under the tongue every hour until symptoms subside.
I woke up the next day feeling fine, but a later than normal lunch left me with a headache, then on the couch feeling like a full blown cold was upon me. I had sinus tension, body aches and felt very tired. I began the Cold Care tabs again, along with orange juice, and a dose of Airborne. I rested that evening. I woke up the next morning and was fully recovered! NO symptoms, feeling a bit tired, but otherwise great!
I’m sold.

I went online to MotherNature.com and ordered their Oscillococcinum and Cold and Flu Away with Influenzin 200.
I’ll let you know how it goes!
